Self-Myofascial Release

Self-Myofascial Release is a highly effective technique, which facilitates the release of muscle fibers (myo) and connective tissue (fasciae). It is a type of self-massage that focuses on correcting restrictions of movement brought about by excessive sitting, bad posture, imbalanced athletics, emotional stress, injury or aging.

The technique is very deep and effective designed to unwind bound fascia surrounding the muscles and encourage the restructuring of proper body alignment. The fascial tissue unwinds the areas of chronic contractions and re-programs the body’s holding patterns. It provides many of the same benefits as traditional massage to enhance structural balance, open and stretch the body, reduce restrictions, tension and chronic pain, and improve the flow of blood and oxygen. This is a convenient and economical self-treatment option.

What is fascia?

Fascia is a specialized layer of connective tissue, which wraps and penetrates the body matrix completely. Fascia surrounds, infuses and protects every other tissue, tendon, muscle, bone, ligament and organ of the body and is its richest sensory organ. It gives support and protection to the body. Myofascia is responsible for maintaining good posture, range of motion and flexibility. It is multi- dimensional tissue that resembles a spider web as a continuous weave of thread.

When fascia is damaged it tightens and pulls in a specific area of the body (adhesions) creating tension (trigger points), and restricting movement in the rest of the body also. Just like when you poke a spider web and the threads gather more and contract in that place, affecting the rest of the web.

Eg, working at a computer for hours at a time thickens the fascia in the upper/middle back.

Over time this causes muscles to become tight and weak, and the surrounding fascia starts to thicken and shorten to protect the underlying muscle from further damage. When fascia becomes restricted, adhesions form causing soreness, restricted movement, gait change and potential injury. Tight and restricted fascia may lead to a variety of symptoms including muscular pain, chronic tension, breathing difficulties, recurring injuries, poor posture, lack of mobility, and deeply held physical and emotional traumas.

What happens in a session?

You will learn techniques to release the lower and upper body to restore function and ease of movement. You will be guided through a series of exercises utilizing small balls, blocks and a roller in congested areas of the body, allowing the weight of the body to simply relax down onto the prop. The amount of intensity is under your control. The techniques are simple and easy to apply and that you can take home with you.

The approach is body-mind centred as an embodiment tool incorporating mindfulness techniques and grounding practices, leading to increased self-awareness on all levels and a balanced nervous system. This is slow, deep and often intense work, remaining on one spot for several minutes and so you will be encouraged to stay present and breathe deeply. Create fundamental long lasting changes for the physical and emotional body.
