IMAGINE…
Waking up to astonishing landscape, fresh mountain air, the serenity of nature, and morning Yoga and meditation against the majestic backdrop of the Ganesh Himal (7422m) and Sringi Himal, (7187m) and Boudha Himal (6672m) offering magnificent clear views. Then trekking through amazing scenery widely rich in wildlife, flora, fauna, and medicinal plants, as well as Yaks, Monkeys, Blue Sheep Himalayan Thar, and Ghoral, including endangered species, such as the Snow-Leopard. An area all relatively untouched by commercialism, keeping its unique charm, since only opening to foreigners in 2008, hence having cultural value that no longer even remains in Tibet.
Located near the remote borderlands of the high Himalayas and Tibet are several sacred beyul, secret valleys found by people with pure minds and hearts. These beyuls were created by Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava), the renowned 8th-century mystic who introduced Buddhism to the Tibetan, Nepali and Bhutanese people in the Himalayas. Tsum Valley, in the northern Gorkha region, is known as the Beyul Kyimolung, is the holy hidden valley of happiness, a haven of peace, prosperity, spirituality and a sacred refuge for true seekers and believers.
Exploring the many secluded Tibetan Gompas (Monasteries or Nunneries) dotted through the valley, abundantly painted with Buddhist murals, excellent artistic scripts, and chanting of Mantra (Puja), we even spend the night in one. Rachen Gompa (Nunnery), Dephyundonma Gompa (Nunnery), and Gumba Lundang (Nunnery) to name but a few, and the largest monastery Mu Gompa at the top of the foothill at the farthest point in the valley. In spectacular surroundings, overlooked by high white capped peaks, in total isolation it is a true hermitage where we hear the sound of the wind passing through the eaves. Established in 1895 AD it includes many religious books including the Kangyur, a life size statue of Avalokiteshwara and images of Guru Padmasambhava and Tara.
On the way rests the Piren Phu cave (Pigeon Cave) which is one of the most sacred caves in the valley, located at the foot of a rugged cliff near the village of Burji. The famous Tibetan saint called Milarepa was believed to have meditated in that cave as his footprint is imprinted on the cave. The valley possess many Buddhist tales surrounding its past, including those of Milarepa, turning this valley from warlike cannibals to a place so devoted to peace that no animal or fish is ever eaten. Also the tale of the circumambulation of Guru Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche).
Climbing the Budhi Gandaki valley upstream via lush green meadows, glacial rivers, a steep-sided gorge, a narrow canyon, cascading waterfalls, suspension bridges, we follow the route of the Manaslu Circuit for the first four days. The canyon has sheer sides full of large boulders with Buddhist religious symbols painted on them, and the mantra, Om Mani Padme Hum, in massive meter high Tibetan letters. Entering Tsum Valley from the main trail you find yourself in dense tropical forests of blooming rhododendron, juniper and pine.
Wandering through remote Tibetan villages with friendly locals to greet you, at an altitude of between 2,400m and 3,700m, we stay in simple homestays gaining insight into traditional Himalayan lifestyles. The rock-strewn trail is aligned with colourful Tibetan prayer flags, artistic Chortens (Shrines), Kanis (Buddhist gates), and long lines of Buddhist Mani walls carved with paintings of deities and inscribed with Buddhist prayers in their thousands of stone slabs. Learning about Tibetan Buddhist philosophy during the walk, you forget about your problems and your busy life back at home, and open to positivity and grace, providing the perfect journey for in depth practice and solitude. The valley is known as a land of heightened enlightenment.

KATHMANDU
Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, is an incredibly diverse city of culture and lifestyle, where ancient traditions rub shoulders with the latest technology. It is like stepping back in time, or into another world with its rich history of religions, arts and architecture. The city is charming, chaotic, bustling, serene, spiritual, alive and asleep – all at once. It is totally unique and different to anywhere you’ll visit in the world and with it’s sensory overload it is nothing short of fascinating. The curious traveler can expand their horizons with breath taking Newari architecture, Hindu and Buddhist Temples, quaint vibrant streets, cosy restaurants, and an over abundance of arts, crafts and clothing shops.
The city stands at an elevation of approximately 1,400 metres (4,600 ft) in the bowl-shaped Kathmandu Valley of central Nepal. It is surrounded by four major mountains: Shivapuri, Phulchoki, Nagarjun, and Chandragiri. Kathmandu Valley is part of three districts (Kathmandu, Lalitpur, and Bhaktapur), and has the highest population density in the country. Kathmandu is our start and end point for the trek each year, and a great place to stock up on supplies or buy gifts to take home.
TSUM VALLEY
The Tsum Valley Trek is one the most authentic treks in the Manaslu Conservation area, North of Gorkha region. Tsum Valley opened the door to outside visitors in just 2008 and, for that reason, is pristine and relatively untouched by tourism. It is slowly getting attention from the world to its existence of the complete isolation from development and infrastructure. Since 1920, the Upper tsum region has been officially protected by the local Buddhist people as a Shyakya (“Non-sacrifcing area”). Killing animals ,even for ritual purposes, is not allowed, nor is the trade of meat, collection of honey, or setting fire to the forest.
Tsum valley is highly regarded as one of the ancient Buddhist Pilgrimage treks/routes due to the astounding facts and striking location itself. It is isolated from the southern lowlands (a five day trek distant) by deep forested gorges and cascading rivers, and from Tibet in the north by high snow-covered passes. It is home to 18 small villages and about 4000 people of the indigenous ethnic group known as “Tsumbas”. They are primarily of Tibetan origin and practice Buddhism and Bon religions. “Tsum” is a Tibetan word derived from “Tsombo” which means vivid and its people are called “Tsumba”. They have their own dialects, culture, tradition, customs and way of doing things. In a way their culture and tradition is in contrast from other parts of Nepal. Tsum Valley is famed as the “hidden valley” with unique characteristics of mystery, myth and majestic beauty. Tsum valley area is also called another name, the Tsum Tso Chuksum. Too, it means the thirteen provinces ruled as a single territory.
One of Nepal’s most beautiful valleys, it is cut off from the southern lowlands of Nepal by deep, forested gorges and swift rivers, and from Tibet in the north by snow-covered passes. The trek adjoins with the popular Manaslu circuit trail for up to four days of our journey, and we take the trail right for the narrow high path climb to Lokpa i.e way to Tsum Valley which awaits with countless adventures, diversity and simplicity of local peoples, chortens, monasteries, and Mt. Shringi Himal and Mt. Ganesh Himal itself. It has a long history of trade which still holds living hood of people, culture and Buddhist philosophy.
ACCOMMODATION & MEALS
Kathmandu provides us with a bit more luxury than during the trek, so we stay in beautiful hotels, twin share deluxe rooms, with breakfast included. The city is vibrant and offers many cafes and restaurants to explore and sample the local dishes, as well as Asian or International if you prefer. A welcome dinner is our opportunity to gather for the first time and get to know each other, over wonderful Nepalese cuisine, as well a farewell dinner on the last night.
During the trek we really go back to basics with a simple bed in shared rooms, communal dining rooms, and sometimes hot, but mostly cold showers. Most of the accommodation is in home stays with the locals, sometimes in Buddhist monasteries and other times in simple guesthouses. This way we get to sample the real way of life of the local culture, and hospitality of the people who welcome you with large smiles and yak butter tea! The meals are also simple the more remote we trek, cooked in the local villages. The traditional meal of Nepal is dal bhat, a nutritious dish of rice with lentils and vegetable curry. If you have special dietary requirements, please let us know in advance.
MY INSPIRATION
I always had the desire to travel to Nepal and Tibet, nowhere else in the world had this effect on me. I spent my 20s traveling through these countries, as well as India and South East Asia, which led me to spend 16 months living in Tibetan Buddhist Monasteries/Centres in Nepal and the UK. Since then I have dedicated my life to the path of Yoga & Buddha Dharma, living in Asia full time for over a decade now.
First arriving in Nepal in 2003 traveling overland from Lhasa, Tibet, to Kathmandu, as a young 25 year old, I remember it being an awe inspiring journey! The rugged terrain, alpine scenery and waterfalls cascading over the jeeps along the meandering cliff edge route. The vibrancy of Nepal, the mountains, the colours, sites, smells and deep richness of Tibetan Buddhism and the Nepali people gained a special place in my heart. Returning many times, I lived in Pullahari Monastery, Kathmandu, studying Buddhist Philosophy for three months in 2006, and my current teacher has a monastery in Kathmandu, Tergar Osel Ling.
Another thing, I love walking! It clears my mind, it connects me to nature, and it opens me to the vastness of life and possibility, tuning into something much bigger than myself. I never owned a vehicle when I lived in the West, I walked or cycled everywhere. I have trekked above 5200m three times, completing the Everest Base Camp Trek, Nepal side (2005) at 5364m, and Tibet side (2003), at 5200m, as well as Holy Mt. Kailash in Tibet (2011) at 5630m. Passionate about sharing my love for Yoga, the mountains and Tibetan Buddhism, it is my pleasure to assist you on this journey developing wisdom and compassion.

FAQs
1. Why should I choose Himalaya Travel Adventures to organize my trek/expedition?

Roni also has frequently traveled to Nepal and undergone various high altitude treks herself. Together HTA and PNY provide a unique opportunity to combine Yoga and Trekking with highly knowledgeable guides and teachers.
2. What if I have never been trekking before?
Himalaya Travel Adventures are appropriate for beginners/experienced people. It is expected that you should be in good physical shape prior to the trek/expedition, that you maintain a regular exercise routine, walking, cycling or jogging, and that you are able to walk 4-8 hours per day for most days during trek. The Tsum Valley Trek is a moderate trek suitable for keen walkers/trekkers who are able to walk with a light rucksack. The homestays and accommodation along the way is very basic, with quite often cold showers, so we will be roughing it a little bit, but it all adds to the experience!
3. How about Altitude Sickness during the trek ?
HTA does their best in itinerary for the pacing and progression to altitude adjustment during high altitude treks. Sahadev (our guide) closely monitors the effects of altitude on clients/trekkers, and in case of sickness, he can move you quickly to a lower altitude. Altitude sickness can occur above 3000 meters, especially if you rise too fast, which is caused by an oxygen deficiency in the brain. The highest altitude we go on the Tsum Valley Trek is 4060m, and we try to minimize the risk of altitude sickness by not climbing more than 500 meters per day, but total prevention is not guaranteed. The guide will keep a watchful eye if you notice a headache, nausea or dizziness.
4. What if I need medical assistance at some point during the trip?
In case of an emergency, our staff are well trained and know how to facilitate medical treatment and emergency transport. In the mountains they do our best in the most effective way possible. Please ensure you have travel and medical insurance for high altitude.
5. What kind of Yoga do we do?
We engage in simple warming exercises, especially if it is really cold at the higher altitudes, which leads into a Hatha Slow Flow with emphasis on the breath and mindfulness. Some repetitive movements to support the body and breath for trekking, as well as some static holds of postures, to increase strength and flexibility. Pranayama (breath techniques), Sound, Mantra and Meditation will support our practice for deeper experiences especially in this sacred land. Towards the end of the day we will invite gentle Yin Yoga and Restorative to rest the body and mind, and calm the nervous system, increasing receptivity and inner listening. Yoga spaces will be simple and sometimes outside.
6. How much luggage can I bring?
It is always best to travel light! Porters will carry your main bags which will be restricted in weight, usually around 15kg. You will receive a packing list once registered for the trip to help you with prioritizing. Buy lightweight goods such as sleeping bag, yoga mat (if you bring) etc. You will be expected to carry a small day pack with essential items in such as water, waterproof jacket, snacks, warm top etc. Remember we are going back to basics so use this as an opportunity to live with less. You can buy many supplies in Kathmandu also for a cheaper price than in the West. You will definately need a good pair of hiking boots!
7. Which vaccinations are recommended for Nepal?
There are some travel vaccinations that are recommended as standard when you go to Nepal: Hepatitis A and B, Typhoid fever and DTP. Consult your Doctor or the Medical Clinic for personal advice. Also take a good look at your health insurance policy and check whether it offers global coverage.
8. Where can I get my visa for Nepal?
In Europe, USA, or Australia you can easily go to the consulate of Nepal in your home country to apply for your visa. If you have the correct documents with you, they will be issued immediately. You can get a visa for 15, 30 or 90 days. Alternatively please check if your country is eligible for a visa on arrival.
9. What is the climate like in Nepal?
There are five seasons in Nepal: winter, spring, summer, monsoon and autumn. Spring and Autumn are the best seasons, because the chance of clear weather is greatest. In April/May it is Spring and so coming out of winter, the coldest months, so an ideal time for trekking. The Spring flowers and fauna bloom and we have clear blue skies, and sunshine. Temperatures can drop at night to sometimes minus degrees, while during the day it can reach up to 25 degrees.
10. Which currency is used?
The currency is the Nepalese Rupee. It is easy to exchange money when you arrive or use an ATM. You can spend around 500 Rupees per day – 5 euros converted on little necessities.
11. Social Responsibility: Giving back
This is a Not-for-Profit trip where the profit all goes to the local people in Nepal I’m working with, as well as small percentage being donated to Tergar Osel Ling Tibetan Monastery in Kathmandu. This is the monastery of my current meditation teacher Yongey Mingyur Rinpoche. Most people in Nepal are still rebuilding their house after the earthquakes and the pandemc, and have a hard time getting money for healthcare etc. Some people don’t have the money to send their kids to school (especially in the less-visited mountain villages). This trek is thus bringing great benefit to the local people.
